Job Responsibilities
The incoming Welfare Benefits Specialist will deliver welfare benefits advice, advocacy, and casework to clients. This includes both complex cases and tribunal representation. Typical responsibilities include:
- Providing specialist welfare benefits advice to claimants, carers and their representatives, particularly those who may have received a personal injury payment.
- Carrying out detailed written benefit assessments for Court of Protection clients to assist Deputies in meeting legal requirements.
- Preparing and presenting appeal cases, including tribunal representation at First Tier and Upper Tribunal.
- Managing casework and advocacy, ensuring clients fully understand complex information in written and verbal communications.
- Negotiating and liaising with local authorities, statutory bodies, and voluntary agencies.
- Keeping up to date with new legislative changes, policies, and practices through training.
- Delivering updates to colleagues on welfare benefits issues.
- Maintaining accurate case records and producing reports as required.
- Supporting the team in achieving performance targets.
Person Specification
The incoming applicant will ideally have experience in welfare benefits advocacy, but trainee applicants will also be considered. The hiring company is seeking someone with strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and a commitment to supporting vulnerable clients. Key attributes include:
- A strong knowledge of the benefits system, entitlements, and eligibility processes (or willingness to learn for trainee applicants).
- At least three years’ recent experience in welfare benefits advice and advocacy (for experienced applicants).
- Experience of challenging benefit decisions and representing claimants at tribunals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex matters clearly.
- Ability to work sensitively with vulnerable clients, including those with brain injuries or complex needs.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage a varied caseload.
- A positive, motivated, and flexible approach to work.
- Excellent numeracy and comprehension skills.
