Eventus Legal are seeking a Family Head of Department to join a long-standing regional law firm in Windsor, Berkshire. This permanent job offers the opportunity to lead and develop the Family Department while managing a broad caseload across divorce and separation, financial remedies, private children matters, cohabitation disputes and pre- and post-nuptial agreements. The successful Head of Department will play an important part in the continued growth, performance and reputation of the department. The remuneration package is open to discussion and includes a performance bonus structure, 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays and an additional day off for your birthday, Christmas closure arrangements and a car parking space in Windsor.
Role Responsibilities
This is a senior fee-earning and leadership position with responsibility for high-quality family law work and the effective management and development of the department. Key responsibilities will include:
- Undertaking a full range of family law work, including divorce and separation, financial remedy proceedings, private children matters, cohabitation disputes and pre- and post-nuptial agreements.
- Providing clear, practical and commercially focused advice to clients in a professional and empathetic manner.
- Managing a family law caseload effectively, including accurate file management, time recording and compliance with internal systems.
- Leading and developing the Family Department, including supervising junior lawyers, trainees and support staff and conducting regular performance discussions.
- Setting and monitoring departmental objectives, performance targets, billing and overall financial performance.
- Overseeing file reviews, quality control and regulatory compliance across the department.
- Contributing to business development and marketing, including networking, attending events and building professional relationships.
- Supporting recruitment and working collaboratively with other departments to provide a joined-up service to clients.
- Addressing departmental team and performance issues fairly and consistently, escalating more serious or ongoing matters where appropriate.
Person Specification
Applications are welcomed from experienced family lawyers who can combine strong technical ability with the leadership and commercial awareness needed to manage a department effectively. You should also be able to demonstrate the following:
- Substantial experience handling a broad family law caseload, including divorce, financial remedies and private children matters.
- The ability to provide practical, client-focused advice with professionalism, empathy and sound judgement.
- Experience of supervising, supporting or developing colleagues within a legal team.
- Strong organisational and commercial skills, including the ability to manage files, deadlines, billing and departmental priorities effectively.
- The ability to maintain high standards of quality, compliance and confidentiality.
- Confidence in business development, networking and building professional relationships, together with a collaborative approach across the wider firm.

- Flexible remuneration package, with scope to discuss the balance between base salary and bonus.
- Standard bonus structure based on a billing target of 3.5 times salary, paying 15% of billings above target, with scope to negotiate the bonus rate up to 20%.
- 25 days' annual leave, plus bank holidays and an additional day off for your birthday.
- Christmas closure, with any closure days beyond two retained annual leave days gifted by the firm.
