Job Responsibilities

This Assistant Mortgage Underwriter job sits within a busy mortgage underwriting function and supports the assessment and progression of mortgage lending decisions in line with policy and regulatory standards. The incoming Assistant Mortgage Underwriter will work closely with senior underwriters while developing underwriting capability and judgement.

• Supporting the assessment and underwriting of new mortgage and additional borrowing applications in line with lending criteria and responsible lending policy.
• Reviewing mortgage applications and supporting documentation for completeness, accuracy and correct system input.
• Preparing cases for underwriting decision and recommending outcomes with clear supporting rationale.
• Identifying applications requiring referral or escalation to higher mandate holders.
• Completing application checks, conditions and system updates accurately and within agreed timescales.
• Communicating professionally with intermediaries, customers and colleagues to progress applications efficiently.
• Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to obtain outstanding documentation and information.
• Supporting system testing, updates and maintenance of underwriting process documentation.
• Assisting with underwriting management information and reporting.
• Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and customer experience.
• Supporting risk identification and mitigation within the underwriting process.

Person Specification

This Assistant Mortgage Underwriter job will suit a motivated Financial Services professional who is looking to progress their career within mortgage underwriting. • Experience working in Mortgage Administration or as an Assistant Mortgage Underwriter is highly desirable.
• Strong understanding of mortgage application processing and supporting documentation.
• Confident decision-making skills with an awareness of risk and compliance.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain information clearly and professionally.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage workload effectively.
• Proficient IT skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Strong general IT literacy and willingness to learn underwriting systems.
• Collaborative and proactive approach within a team environment.
• Resilient and adaptable mindset with a positive attitude toward development and progression.
• Willingness to travel to other business locations where required.
